Folic acid is a form of B vitamin. Folic acid is water-soluble vitamin. It gets flushed out from the body so the body cannot store it for a long period of time. Therefore, to maintain having folic acid in the body, it needs to be taken in a regular basis. It is also called folate, Vitamin B9, or folacin. Folic acid is also used for other conditions commonly associated with folic acid deficiency, including ulcerative colitis, liver disease, alcoholism, and kidney dialysis.

Others use folic acid to prevent certain kinds of cancer like colon cancer and cervical cancer. It is also used to prevent heart disease and and stroke. It helps the body build and maintain DNA and is important in helping the body make new cells, especially red blood cells.

Folic acid can be found in nature. It is present in green and leafy vegetables, such as broccoli, lettuce, and asparagus. It is also present in fruits such as bananas, melons, and lemons. It can also be found in beans, orange juice, and tomato juice.

Can folic acid help in treating gout?

There had been some researches which show the effectiveness of folic acid in treating gout. However, other succeeding researches failed to yield the same results. It is thought by many people that folic acid is used to neutralize an enzyme called xanthine oxidase which encourages the production of uric acid in the body. Blocking this enzyme might stop the production of uric acid and prevent future gout attacks. Folic acid may also help in eliminating the acid that has been previously produced by the body.

Folic acid as gout treatment may not work for everyone. Some may find this effective and other may not. This is simply because our body respond differently to treatments and medications. It is best to consult your doctor before taking folic acid supplements for gout treatment.
