Chinese herbal medicine is a traditional form of medicine, which has undergone continuous process of development in treating illnesses that afflict human beings. In China, herbal medicine is not considered as an alternative medicine but it is used alongside modern medicine. Chinese herbal medicine believes in the premise that health is not only present in the absence of disease, but it comes when we can harmonize the body’s capacity for fulfilment and enjoyment of life.

In Chinese medicine, gout is considered as a joint painful wind syndrome caused by wrong lifestyle habits which include unregulated eating and drinking, or from external evil pathogens such as wind-damp, damp-heat, or damp-cold. As gout progresses, Qi and blood stasis develop creating sharp and excruciating pain which cause immobility. Most of the time, gout first attacks on the big toe. Early attacks may not be very painful, however, if gout is left untreated, the uric acid in the body builds up to a higher level producing a more severe gout attack that could affect the other joints in the body such as the knees, elbows, heels, wrists, ankles, hands, and fingers.

Gout is considered a metabolic disease which comes along with diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. Uric acid is a result of the breakdown of  purines that produces mono-sodium urate crystals that accumulate on the particular cartilage of joints, on tendons, and in the surrounding tissues.  Purines and an over production of uric acid can also be a result of the over consumption of purine rich foods such as anchovies, liver, beef kidneys, brains, herring, mackerel, and game meats. Gout is associated with too much intake of protein rich foods, red meat, and alcohol.
